Informed Consent & Commission Disclosure
As your insurance broker, IRB – Insurance Risk Brokers may receive a commission from the insurer when we arrange or renew a retail insurance policy on your behalf. Australian law requires us to obtain your informed consent before receiving this commission.
This page explains what informed consent means, how commissions work, and how IRB manages this process in line with our legal, ethical and professional obligations.
What Is Informed Consent?
Informed consent means you understand how we are paid before we arrange or renew a retail insurance product for you.
When IRB recommends or arranges a retail insurance policy and receives a commission, we must clearly disclose:
Who pays the commission (the insurer)
The commission rate expressed as a percentage
How often the commission is paid
What services IRB provides in return
This ensures you can make an informed decision about whether you are comfortable with how we are remunerated before proceeding.
Your consent also applies to future renewals of these policies and is irrevocable, unless both you and IRB agree to vary it. If anything changes — such as the insurer, commission rate or payment frequency — we will obtain a new consent from you.
What Services Are Covered by Commission?
The commission paid by insurers covers the services IRB provides, including:
Insurance advice and risk guidance
Product placement and policy structuring
Negotiation with insurers
Policy renewals and adjustments
Claims assistance and advocacy
Ongoing client support throughout the policy lifecycle
More detail is available in our Terms of Engagement
